One of the particular (and unexpected) pleasures of working at Godine was the opportunity to work with artists like Barry Moser, whose engravings I had long admired. We’d become friendly during production of an earlier book, so he gave me a lot of latitude to shape this one once he’d established outlines of the design. Barry’s text was actually rather short relative to the number of illustrations, so I gave the pages unusually generous line spacing and let the images rule the layouts. I set the text in Gudrun Zapf von Hesse’s Nofret to keep things from getting too airy.
