The Library of Babel: Jacket

The Last Englishman: The Double Life of Arthur Ransome

by Jorge Luis Borges, etchings by Erik Desmazières

My second and last chance to print with the stellar Stinehour Press in Lunenburg, Vermont, and one of the few times I’ve ever been on press with a book. The whole package took a lot of negotiating: rights to the story, rights to the translation, rights to the art, but the effort was worth it. It was tempting to try something tricky in the design, but stepping back a little and letting the text and art speak for themselves seemed wiser in the end. Set in Giovanni Mardersteig’s Dante types, I suppose it looks a little like one of the later Officina Bodoni books, too.
