Arthur Krystal’s wide-ranging essays defied a number of attempts at illustration. For no particular reason, I had recently splurged on the purchase of an antique typewriter and decided to spend an afternoon photographing it from a variety of angles under the afternoon sun in my living room. It was an enjoyable experiment, and the hard-to-please author was happy with the results.
