The Arctic Regions by William Bradford: Jacket

The Arctic Regions:
Illustrated with Photographs
Taken on an Art Expedition to Greenland

by William Bradford
Michael Lapides, editor
David R. Godine, Publisher, in association with the New Bedford Whaling Museum

The impetus for this project was the donation to the New Bedford Whaling Museum of a copy of the mammoth (30 x 40") original edition of this book, which recorded a photographic expedition by William Bradford to the frozen North in the 1869 – a monument of Victorian book-making and a landmark in the history of photography and exploration. Published in 1873, the book combined a portfolio of albumen prints with a text printed by Charles Whittingham II at the legendary Chiswick press, complete with wood-engraved initials by Mary Byfield. The original plan was to produce a full-size facsimile: we convinced the museum that a trade book was more a viable option. We preserved some of the feel of the original by incorporating the Byfield initials into the text setting (in Whittingham’s beloved Caslon types) and printing the images in rich a brown tritone.
