Chiarenza’s first book with Godine, Landscapes of the Mind, came out in 1994. I knew it well, as I did his book on Aaron Siskind, Pleasures and Terrors, so I was very excited to work on this little book that mixed traditional photographs from early in his career with more abstract images generated in the studio. Handling his magnificent 16 × 20" prints was intimidating, but Carl was not. He trusted me to make the book work. I kept things simple, worked out a tidy grid, and let the photographs do the rest.
