One Times Square:
A Century of Change at the Crossroads of the World
written & illustrated by Joe McKendry
David R. Godine, Publisher
After the success of Beneath the Streets of Boston, Joe McKendry was eager to move on to an idea he’d been playing with for a long time: telling at the evolution of Times Square from a single vantage point, looking up toward the iconic New York Times building at One Times Square. Joe really dug into the history of the site and the surrounding neighborhood, finding amazing historical images and making important research contacts in New York. He and I spent a string of fascinating afternoons in his studio, looking over sketches and finished paintings and discussing the nuts and bolts of the text. The resulting book earned wonderful reviews, including a rave from the Times itself. It’s still one of my favorite Godine projects.
