Medieval Treasures from Hildesheim

edited by Peter Barnet, Michael Brandt, and Gerhard Lutz
The Metropolitan Museum of Art

A glittering array of rarely-seen art and artifacts from a German abbey, this book required a rigorous grid to control the many variables: a lengthy essay with supporting photographs, a catalogue section with detailed text accompanying bleed and close-up images, and the usual scholarly apparatus of bibliography and notes. I softened the potentially forbidding text matter with a ragged setting and warmed it up with Fred Smeijer’s Quadraat and Quadraat Sans.
