from the 1960s into the Digital Age

Author-supplied art can pose serious diplomatic problems: on occasion I’ve had to find a way to tell someone that we (implying the publisher and I, but frequently really just I) have decided not to use a prized image on a cover. Quite the opposite in this case. Aram Saroyan is as accomplished a photographer as he is a writer, so I had several choices. Although he rejected my first effort (using an older and more well-known image) he was very happy with the final version, using one of his recent experiments with the camera in his cell phone. Bordering on the edge of abstraction, this vibrant image feels modern and hints intriguingly at a narrative yet to be described.
